MA (Communication)

The objectives of the MA (Communication) programme are:

1) To study the process of mass communications from the perspective of mass communication theory, political economy, historiographical/cultural studies, and development.

2) Producing & studying both technology and its mediated usage.

3) To impart skill-based training to prepare students for the ever growing industry

Admission to the MA programme is through an all India Entrance Test. Candidates who clear the entrance test will be called for an interview. Only students who clear both the entrance test and the interview will be admitted into the programme.

Core courses such as Introduction to Communication, Historiographies of Media, Media Law & Ethics, Basic writing skills, Introduction to Radio & Video Production etc are offered in the first two semesters.

Students, according to the stream assigned, will specialize in one of the following three areas in the last two semesters. Graduates who pass out of the department will have a broad understanding of the foundations of Communication and media and acquire indepth knowledge/skills in at least one area of specialization.

ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAMME:

The admission notification is announced on the university website and all national newspapers. A nation-wide entrance examination is held in almost 25 centres across the country. The entrance exam consists of objective type questions covering general knowledge, media awareness and verbal aptitude.  Those shortlisted will be required to appear for a personal interview at the department. The Television & Radio Production specialisation stream students to the art and technique of single & multi-camera production with focus on learning and exploring applications for camera, lens, lighting, composition, and editing.

Students also learn the theory and practice of audio production and its relationship to other aspects of media production. Multi-track studio recording and mixing; digital recording and editing form part of the courses.

Students practice the art & science of gathering, writing and producing news for television & radio. Principles, procedures, techniques and terminology of television studio & electronic field production, exploring field camera operation, video editing, and video producing techniques for commercial and non-commercial arenas are the other courses during the two-semester specialisation period.

A four to six-week successful completion of Internship in any media organisation is mandatory for students to acquire the degree certificate.

The Print Journalism and New Media specialisation stream introduces them to the basics of writing, media law & ethics, media institutions & society. They also learn to write for print & the new media. Feature & analytical writing are major components of study, as is specialised reporting for different areas.

Students write & design newspapers & news portals using industry grade software.
They also learn media management skillsets, web production & content management using content management systems (CMS).

Students are encouraged to write for newspapers, magazines & web portals during their study period.

Students are introduced to the latest communication theories, media law & ethics. They study film theory & criticism & learn to analyse television programmes, & the interface between society, media & culture.

Students also learn to apply communication research in both academic & industry settings. Electives during the last two semesters also provide an opportunity for them to study areas like media & gender, community media, issues in ICTs, globalisation & communication/media.

A full-length thesis towards the end of the programme besides constantly participating in seminars & conferences both national & international is mandatory.
